Pay Parity is one of the most under-discussed menaces in the field of entertainment all over the world. Following the 2019 controversy regarding pay parity around Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim, Warner Bros and Color Force have now roped in Chinese- Australian writer Amy Wang to script Crazy Rich Asians .
Wang takes on sole writing credentials for Jon M. Chu’s sequel starring Henry Golding and Constance Wu. The successful first feature came out in 2018 and was centred around a Chinese-American professor’s experience meeting her boyfriend’s crazy rich Singaporean family. The first part also had Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong and Michelle Yeoh co-starring Constance Wu and Henry Golding. However the plot and casting of the much awaited sequel is still kept under wraps. Reports suggest even a third part in the making.
Wang is currently writing and directing a horror outing for Paramount and has directed shows too. A cannes Lion Award winner for short “Unnatural” in 2018, Wang is also story editor for Netflix’s “Brothers Sun” and also worked in Zoe Saldana Satrrer “From Scratch”.
In 2019, a year after Crazy Rich Asians’ box-office rampage, writer Lim walked out of the planned Crazy Rich Asians sequels after a shocking revelation that she was just paid around 1/10th writer Chiarelli’s pay-cheque.
Director Chu however came out in support of Lim in a detailed statement where he said “that she was able to stand up for her own measure of worth and walk away when she felt like she was being undervalued.” He even said that Lim had already declined the offer by the time he tried to convince Warner Bros to bridge the pay parity. Stay tuned for more details.
