Cristin Milioti Deserved Better: The Golden Globes’ Annual Talent Erasure

Despite preserving (somehow) a legacy of over 82 years, the Golden Globes still manage to upset people. The latest (82nd) edition of the Golden Globes ended up enraging many viewers. Even after breaking ties with the HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association) in 2023 over controversies related to a lack of diversity and allegations of ethical misconduct, the notable awards ceremony is once again in the limelight—and not for the best reasons.

The Golden Globe events are notorious for snubbing many talented performers who genuinely deserve recognition but, shockingly (or perhaps not), fail to receive it. Take Cristin Milioti, for instance, who delivered one of the most compelling performances by a female TV actor in recent years as Sofia Falcone in HBO’s The Penguin series.

We all know how corrupt the HFPA was. Remember the Golden Globes nominations for Emily in Paris in 2021? In exchange for being flown to France for free, the HFPA voters showered the show with numerous nominations, despite there being far better shows than Emily in Paris that year. Now, the awards are being managed by the Golden Globes Foundation. But it seems like nothing has really changed.

One of the biggest snubs during the 82nd edition of the “so-called prestigious” Golden Globes was Cristin Milioti, who definitely deserved her Golden Globe for Best Actress for The Penguin. The Guardian called the snub “a spectacular blunder.” Instead, Jodie Foster won the accolade for True Detective.

Colin Farrell delivered a spectacular performance as the titular manipulative, cunning, and ruthless mob boss in the acclaimed HBO series. However, it was Cristin Milioti who did all the heavy lifting. She made the show remarkable, and her performance was undoubtedly miles ahead of Foster’s work this year. Yet, the Golden Globes completely ignored her. Perhaps, after all these years, the Golden Globes ceremony still hasn’t forgotten how to surprise its audience.

As expected, a large portion of the viewers are enraged by the Golden Globes’ decision—and they’re not wrong at all.

Cristin Milioti is not the only victim of a snub at this year’s Golden Globes. Emilia Pérez won the Golden Globe for Best Non-English Language Movie, despite the presence of far better films among the nominees. Indians are surely heartbroken as Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light failed to win the accolade, even after earning a flawless 100% ‘fresh’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. While Emilia Pérez was entertaining, it simply did not deserve the award, especially with its 76% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Stay tuned for more updates.
