Just a few days back, Auckland-based movies-centric social platform Letterboxd had just revealed its list of the top 50 movies so far from the year 2023. And now, another Indian film has cracked the Letterboxd top 50 narrative movies list (excluding documentaries).
And the Indian movie’s name which has made it to the coveted Letterboxd list is the Marathi language dark comedy film ‘Vaalvi’. It was released in theatres earlier this year in January and later started streaming on the Zee5 OTT platform from 24th February.
‘Vaalvi’ is a comedy thriller movie which is about a married couple Aniket and Avani who are planning to commit suicide because of marital problems. But there is more to the story than meets the eye as the husband is having an extra marital affair with a doctor and has some plans of his own.
‘Vaalvi’ (Rank 27) has not only cracked the Letterbox top 50 list but in doing that, the Indian film has also beaten some popular Hollywood movies such as ‘Scream VI’ (Rank 35), ‘Creed III’ (Rank 38), and ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ (Rank 42), amongst other international films. Moreover, it’s a proud moment for Marathi cinema as a Marathi language film making its way on an international listicle is not a frequent thing.
The Letterboxd top 50 narrative films list 2023 has been topped by the romantic drama movie ‘Past Lives’ (Rank 1) followed by Keanu Reeves’ blockbuster action extravaganza ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ (Rank 2).
‘Vaalvi’ is currently streaming on Zee5 in Marathi language with English subtitles. You can watch the film’s trailer below.
