Disney revealed Daisy Ridley’s return to the Star Wars franchise as Rey at last year’s Star Wars Celebration. The actress is all set to reprise the character in the upcoming untitled Rey movie, which Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is helming. Fans will witness Rey trying to rebuild the Jedi Order in the film, which will take place nearly 15 years after the events of Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. The movie is still in the early stages of development. Although, Ridley is confident that the project seems like “a different thing this time”.
Ridley talked about her forthcoming Rey (Star Wars) movie in a recent interview with Empire. This is what she said:
“I suppose I feel more like I’m owning it,” Ridley said. “I suppose I owned it the first time. Basically, I’m an adult now. I certainly did not feel like an adult at the time. Obviously, personally, things have changed, and professionally, I’ve had lots of other experiences, and so I definitely feel like it’s a different thing this time. There’s just a lot of joy with me and these films. Honestly, if I wasn’t excited, I wouldn’t have done it. It feels like a great thing to be a part of.”
Ridley also acknowledged how divisive the Star Wars fanbase has been to Rey Skywalker all these years. Yet, she is excited to return to the franchise.
Episode VII: The Force Awakens laid a solid groundwork for Rey’s character development. Despite being derivative, the film did whatever it could to make Star Wars fans happy and nostalgic. Rey could have emerged as one of the best characters from the Sequel Trilogy. However, her characterisation went in a completely new and rather odd direction. As a result, they revolted and started hating Rey as they did not like the direction in which her character was going. TROS had a great opportunity to clean this mess, instead, the ninth episode made things messier than they were before.
Daisy Ridley has suffered substantial hate from the Star Wars franchise for her character, Rey. But now, she has a chance to prove that Rey deserves a place in ‘the galaxy far, far away’. Stay tuned for more updates.
