Dave Chappelle and Netflix reunite. The streamer has announced the release of four comedy specials produced and hosted by the stand-up comedian. The series is called Chappelle’s Home Team and features comedians picked by Chappelle.
Audiences are divided with this announcement after Chappelle’s last special on Netflix – The Closer – was embroiled in controversy. That special, which was released on October 5 last year, received backlash from the LGBTQ community and trans activists for transphobic statements. They demanded Netflix to pull down the show from its platform for being offensive. Few of Netflix’s own employees, including a trans person, demanded removal of the comedy special. In response, Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos defended the stand-up comedian in a leaked internal communication. Sarandos defended Chappelle’s latest special, saying that he believes The Closer does not cross the line on hate or violence. He refused to pay heed to any demands of removing the special from the platform. The leaked communication added further fuel to fire. In the aftermath, several transgender employees have publicly criticized Netflix with some even leaving the company.
Ted Sarandos later admitted ‘screwing up’ internal communication but continued to defend the show in the name of freedom of speech and creative expression. Although the show had opinions divided, it was widely popular and watched.
The Closer was the final chapter of Dave’s six episode deal with Netflix. The controversy around it had left fans and others wondering about the future of the association. However, Netflix has chosen to order more specials. The first of the four specials of Chappelle’s Home Team comedy series will premiere on 28th February 2022. It will feature the comedian Earthquake.
Post this announcement, many viewers on social media have criticised Netflix and are even threatening to cancel their subscription. Netflix on the other hand clearly means business and have decided to stand by the comedian. Which side are you on?
