The makers of the Pratik Gandhi starrer forthcoming social drama had earlier today revealed the film’s first look poster and its title – ‘Dedh Bigha Zameen’. It was also made aware that the film’s shoot will be commenced today in the town of Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh.
The film’s Jhansi schedule will reportedly be shot over a period of 30 days and filming would probably be concluded after this schedule. Around a week ago, the makers had shared just the film’s first look photo of Pratik Gandhi along with his co-star Khushali Kumar (daughter of later music mogul Gulshan Kumar).
Interestingly, at that time, the film’s title was not revealed. It was earlier reported by a leading publication regarding a controversy pertaining to T-Series and Bimal Roy Productions. The alleged dispute was related to the film’s title. Some trade experts had ostensibly stated that the film’s title was previously supposed to be ‘Do Bigha Zameen’ instead of ‘Dedh Bigha Zameen’.
Incidentally, ‘Do Bigha Zameen’ is also the title of a cult 1953 film which was directed and produced by legendary filmmaker Bimal Roy under the production house Bimal Roy productions. However, the purported issue is now evidently resolved and all speculations have been laid to rest because T-Series has finalized the film’s title to be ‘Dedh Bigha Zameen’.
Although the film’s precise plot is being kept under the wraps, the film is being said to revolve around a middle-class family. As the title ‘Dedh Bigha Zameen’ suggests and somewhat similar to Bimal Roy’s ‘Do Bigha Zameen’, the plot’s focal point could be related to a piece of land apparently owned by Pratik Gandhi’s character. So, our guess is that the film’s inspiration could be Bimal Roy’s cult classic movie.
One modern example of a similarly themed Indian film that left a lasting impact amongst cinephiles is Dibakar Banerjee’s directorial debut ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’. This film revolved around a middle-class man’s (Anupam Kher) predicament when his hard-earned piece of land is unscrupulously seized by a corrupt builder.
Moreover, Dedh Bigha Zameen’s tagline ‘Story of a common man’s struggle to fight for what’s rightfully his’ read with the title also suggests that the film’s plot might be reminiscent of Dibakar Banerjee and Bimal Roy’s films.
Pratik Gandhi’s ‘Dedh Bigha Zameen’ is backed by a fantastic creative team that includes Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, ‘Scam 1992’ director Hansal Mehta and Shailesh R Singh. The film is written and being directed by the talented filmmaker Pulkit, who had previously directed the highly-rated show ‘Bose: Dead/Alive’ and the upcoming web series ‘Cartel’. So, the audiences are bound to have high hopes for the film.
