So do you guys remember the ‘Suicide Squad’, the one which came out back in 2016? The one which was critically panned and hated all over? Guess what, the director David Ayer said last month that the film which was released back then was not his original movie, but a Warner Bros. edited version (as if there was any doubt). And obviously since then, twitter has been demanding the “Ayer Cut” of the ‘Suicide Squad’ to be released, with the hashtag #ReleaseTheAyerCut trending, even now.
Rumors regarding the “Ayer Cut” had been circulating since the 2016 release of the movie, and the director had confirmed that he had to make massive script changes and directorial edits to release the “pandemonium of a flick”. I mean, we all knew there were cuts when the movie came out. Joker, who was heavily featured in the feature trailers and said to be one of the more integral villains/antagonists of the film was given barely 11 minutes of screen time in this movie. The editing was shoddy and the CGI was ridiculous.
After Zac Snyder had come out to talk to his fans about his version of the failed ‘Justice League’ movie, he was eventually granted the greenlight by Warner Bros. to release the “Snyder Cut” (that’s where “Ayer Cut” comes from) version. And a few months ago, Snyder was even given half a million dollars and one week to shoot the rest of his film which will be released as a four part mini-series, each one hour long, on September 5th, 2021 on HBO Max.
During this time, Ayer has come out and stated that the first forty minutes of his version of the movie was completely removed, and those were the Joke-centric ones as well. Ayer said that he agreed to the cuts because at the end of the day, the studio makes the final call. But now twitter is asking for the “Ayer Cut” version of ‘Suicide Squad’ to be released just like the Snyder Cut version of ‘JL’. Only time will tell what will happen but if the fans, cast and crew band together, there is nothing they can’t achieve.
The sequel for the film ‘Suicide Squad’ titled ‘The Suicide Squad’ is expected to come to theaters on August 4th, 2021.
