‘Demon Slayer’ Beats ‘Titanic’ In Japanese Box Office!!

The 1997 world-wide phenomenon ‘Titanic’ made over 251 million USD, making it the highest earning box office feature in Japan, till the turn of the century. In 2001, lengendary filmmaker and animator Miyazaki Hayao’s masterpiece ‘Spirited Away’, broke that record and ascended to the top of Japan’s box office at 295.5 million USD. Both ‘Titanic’ and ‘Spirited Away’ looked to stay unbeaten, until now.

‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train’ released on October 16th, 2020 and has crossed over 280 million USD in box office revenue beating ‘Titanic’ and securing the second spot in Japan’s all time highest box office list. We believe, with enough time, the film can beat the Miyazaki masterpiece and take the top spot as well.

The movie ‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train’ is the direct sequel to the 2019 animated series ‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba’, which is based off the manga of the same name, written by Koyoharu Gotoge. The series and film is set in the Japanese Taisho-era, which is supposed to be between mid-1912 and late 1926. The series follows the protagonist Kamado Tanjiro and his sister Kamado Nezuko as they seek to cure Nezuko of her curse.

Obviously the film has done well, as shown from the previously mentioned box office numbers, with it becoming Japan’s highest grossing film of this year (and also this past decade). In fact, the movie is the sixth highest grossing movie of the year 2020. The film dropped six months after the pandemic, so these numbers are really good. So with enough time, we expect both the box office numbers as well as the film ranking to improve as we finish December and reach 2021.

The animated series ‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba’ can be streamed on Netflix.
