Riding high after the widespread acclaim for his star-studded epic sci-fi venture ‘Dune’, virtuoso Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve’s next directorial project is already in the works. The powerhouse director will reportedly (via THR) direct a film adaptation of legendary British science-fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke’s Hugo and Nebula award-winning 1973 novel ‘Rendezvous with Rama’.
So, the presence of the word ‘Rama’ suggests that the book has a direct connection with India and Hindu mythology. We will explain precisely how. In the book’s plotline, astronomers discover a perfect cylindrical and enormous alien starship outside planet Jupiter’s orbit. This spacecraft, on which the entire plot of ‘Rendezvous with Rama’ revolves around, is called Rama – one of the major Hindu deities.
Not just that, in the novel, scientists send an unmanned space probe to know more about the alien spacecraft. The name of the space probe is called ‘Sita’ – Hindu Goddess and wife of Ram. The underlying premise of the book ostensibly follows mankind’s endeavors to unravel the mysteries behind the titular spacecraft ‘Rama’.
Denis Villeneuve seems to have struck the right chord in his recent tryst with the science fiction genre as ‘Rendezvous with Ram’ film adaptation will be his fifth consecutive sci-fi outing after ‘Arrival’ (2016), ‘Blade Runner 2049’ (2017), ‘Dune’ (2021), and its upcoming sequel ‘Dune: Part Two’ (2023).
Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Rendezvous with Ram’ film adaptation is being produced by Alcon Entertainment, the production company behind movies like Christopher Nolan’s ‘Insomnia’, Sandra Bullock’s ‘The Blind Side’, and Denis Villeneuve’s directorial films ‘Prisoners’ and ‘Blade Runner 2049’. Veteran Hollywood actor Morgan Freeman is also attached to co-produce the ambitious project.
‘Rendezvous with Ram’ is regarded as one of the most notable works of Arthur C. Clarke besides ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, and ‘Childhood’s End’, amongst others. It would be immensely interesting to see how Denis Villeneuve approaches an illustrious writer’s premium subject matter ‘Rendezvous with Rama’.
