Not too long ago, it was revealed that Princess Diaries 3 is officially in the works at Disney. While this had fans excited, they had one request to the makers- they wanted the OG cast to return. But if the latest developments are to be believed, it won’t be so.
It was Julie Andrews, who played Clarisse Renaldi in the film who revealed that her return to the role is not probable. She added that while she was talked with regarding reprising the role after the second movie, now that these many years have passed, she is doubtful if the movie will- in her own words- ‘float or run’. It is to be noted that the first movie came out in 2001, followed by the second movie in 2004, i.e, around 18 years ago.
‘Princess Diaries’ starring Anne Hathaway was a coming-of-age comedy film that followed the events of what happens when a messy, sarcastic and sometimes sly teenager Mia Thermopolis found out suddenly that she was the heir to the throne of a country. Andrews played Hathaway’s grandmother whom she had never seen before since her mother and late father (the prince) wanted Mia to have a normal life. The brilliant performances and the banter between the royally brought-up Queen and her teenage and not-so-royal teenage granddaughter provided some of the best moments of the movie.
Hathaway has earlier revealed that she would like to return as Mia if Andrews would be willing to return for the movie as well. With Andrews seemingly out of the picture, Hathaway’s return is at best, uncertain.
While Disney seems interested in making the movie, official announcements regarding the cast remain to be seen. If the original actors who made the movie the multi-million-grossing movie it is are not returning for the threequel, do we really have a third Princess Diaries movie to look forward to?
