In future dictionary editions, when defining the word “success,” it should include a photo of James Cameron. Over the years, he has attracted the largest audience and set box office records like no one else. With the anticipated success of “Avatar 2,” fans are eagerly awaiting the third installment.
After its successful theatrical run in 2009, “Avatar” returned with a second installment after 13 years. It managed to follow in the footsteps of the original, becoming the third highest-grossing film of all time, with a staggering $2.3 billion.
Despite the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike causing postponements for many big titles, “Avatar” is an exception. The movie has already completed filming, right after wrapping up the shooting for the second part.
James Cameron confirmed that the movie will maintain its release deadline, as Disney announced a new target of 2025 instead of the previously stated 2024. When asked about the ongoing development, Cameron stated, “We’re in a very hectic two years of post-production right now, so it will be Christmas of 2025.”
Post-Fox merger, Disney further delays James Cameron’s “Avatar” sequels. Originally planned two years apart, “Avatar 3” is now set to release on Dec. 19, 2025; “Avatar 4” on Dec. 21, 2029; and “Avatar 5” on Dec. 19, 2031. The final movie premieres 22 years after the 2009 original blockbuster, extending the franchise into 2031.
Though the hype won’t die down, one factor impacting the franchise is the age factor. Zoe Saldana, who will be 53 when the last ‘Avatar’ releases, was just 27 during the first installment. Co-star Sam Worthington, playing Jake Sully, will be 55, and director James Cameron, 77.
