Is Bengali cinema set to steal the spotlight from Bollywood and the South film industries? The answer is yes, if the opulence of the upcoming Bengali film ‘Devi Chaudhurani‘ is anything to go by.
As most of us are aware, big-budget films are predominantly associated with Bollywood and the South Indian movie industries. Given the frequency of these big-budget films in Indian cinema, Bengali cinema has been struggling to compete without producing its own blockbuster films.
The upcoming Bengali movie “Devi Chaudhurani” promises to do for Bengali cinema what Baahubali did for the Telugu film industry. Directed by Subhrajit Mitra, the film is an adaptation of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s eponymous novel ‘Devi Chowdhurani’ (Bandit Queen of Bengal). It hopes to recapture the socio-political situation of 18th century Bengal.
‘Devi Chaudhurani’ will be released in seven languages, a true pan-India film from the Bengali film industry. The film stars Srabanti Chatterjee in the title role, alongside Prosenjit Chatterjee, Sabyasachi Chakrabarty and Arjun Chakrabarty in pivotal roles.
Now, the burning question emerges: Will this Bengali cinema captivate the hearts of audiences? According to director Subhrajit Mitra, the hard work of Prasenjit (Bhavani Pathak), Srabanti (Devi Chaudhurani) is worth appreciation. The duo has given every shot so dedicatedly that they seem to be living their characters.
Devi Chaudhurani premieres in theatres on 22nd September 2024. It will be released in theatres in Bengali, Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.
