Dhanush’s ‘Jagame Thandiram’ was talk of the town ever since the film’s announcement. It became more prominent when the film was pushed for a digital release on Netflix despite the disapproval of lead star Dhanush. While the film had a lot of hype built up before its release, the reviews didn’t go much in its favour.
But looks like Dhanush fans have made up for whatever the critics didn’t like, especially outside India. As per Netflix’s latest statistics ‘Jagame Thandiram’ has been in Top 10 on Netflix in 12 countries outside India. Not only that, in its first week of streaming on Netflix, half of the film’s viewers were from outside India.
Also, ‘Jagan Thandiram’ ranked no. 1 in 7 countries including in India, Malaysia and the UAE.

And for all this love, film’s director Karthik Subbaraj is filled with gratitude.

The reaction on this statistic, as expected, is a mixed one. While Dhanush fans are overjoyed and feel that the numbers are totally justified, those who didn’t like the movie are not much in agreement with it.
Do these numbers really reflect the truth or is it just the “Dhanush fandom”? On the other hand, could it be the massive hype built around the film before its release that drove these numbers for a start?
We at binged reviewed earlier that ‘Jagame Thandiram’ is a boring gangster drama with no real saving grace. While Dhansuh gave a charged performance, the problem lies with the writing and characterisation of Suruli. Overall, there is a lack of depth in the story.
So to answer the aforementioned questions, as these are the initial numbers, they might very well be misleading. This is because when it comes to stars with mass following, people often tend to watch their films without considering anything else. It’s only after the reviews start pouring in that the viewership is affected.
Despite all this, what’s noticeable here is the fact that more than half the number of people who watched ‘Jagame Thandiram’ in the first week were not from India. And this is when it was a regional language film. Now that’s something impressive!
