At 98, Dick Van Dyke, who has seen the world of cinema transform from film reels to digital cameras and from black-and-white to colour, carries a sense of perspective that only decades of experience can bring.
In a recent interview, the six-time Emmy winner didn’t hold back when asked about his thoughts on Donald Trump returning to office for another four-year term after defeating Kamala Harris in the recent presidential election. He said he finds solace in the thought that he likely won’t be around to see much of Trump’s presidency.
When prompted on whether he feels optimistic about the country’s future, Van Dyke responded by saying, “I hope you’re right.”
Van Dyke supported Bernie Sanders during the 2020 presidential primaries and even spoke at one of Sanders’ campaign rallies. Earlier this year, he voiced support for Joe Biden’s re-election bid before Biden withdrew from the race.
In the lead-up to the recent election, Van Dyke joined other Hollywood figures like Katy Perry, Will Ferrell, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga in sharing videos backing Harris. For him, it was yet another moment to stand up for the future he believes in—even as he acknowledges that his own time left to witness it may be limited.
