Sentiment and Bangla audiences go hand in hand. And no sentiment speaks louder than Satyajit Ray and his craft. His character Feluda has been intertwined with the Bengali identity for decades.
But here’s the thing: as iconic as Feluda is, the formula has gotten stale.
For years, it’s been the same stories, the same tone, and the same safe approach. It’s almost as if the makers have been too scared to touch anything Ray created, and while that reverence is understandable, it’s also limiting. At what point does respecting a classic cross over into recycling the same content, over and over?
Now, Hoichoi stepped in and promised to shake things up with Feludar Goyendagiri. A modern take on Feluda, with Tota Roy Chowdhury taking up the mantle. They gave us better production, a faster pace, and an attempt to make the character more relevant for today’s audiences. But did it work?
Well, that’s debatable.
Sure, some fans were excited about the shift, but let’s be real. Was this an actual improvement, or just a makeover to appeal to the OTT crowd?
The stories still follow the same predictable arc, and while the slicker look might be eye-catching, the core remains unchanged. It feels like Hoichoi slapped a fresh coat of paint on Feluda without addressing the real issue: the character hasn’t evolved in any meaningful way.
And that’s where the frustration lies. There was an opportunity here to genuinely push boundaries, to take Feluda somewhere new, but instead, we got more of the same with a modern veneer. Hoichoi didn’t break the monotony; they dressed it up. But, there were some positive changes as well.
Despite the familiar beats, at least on OTT, the makers are getting more screentime to experiment with the Feluda franchise. This format allows for a deeper exploration of the characters and stories, potentially leading to innovative narratives that could revive the series in exciting ways. Moreover, the Feluda franchise on the big screen had reached a point where a break was necessary; this shift to streaming can actually be a positive thing.
One of the biggest examples of a modern makeover is surely Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock. Despite the audience knowing the plot and story by heart, it brought some newness and that’s what the fans need. Though Hoichoi’s Feluda is flawed, are they going towards a positive direction?
Absolutely yes.
