Out of the many benefits and USPs of Netflix, one prominent pro is that of the documentaries. It is a well known fact that Netflix makes some of the finest documentaries in the world. They are yet to reach that level in India but they certainly are good here as well.
However, something is terribly wrong with the way they promote these documentaries. We realize that not every content is worth a promotion because they serve a very limited audience. But when the same niche-based shows gain a certain international recognition then the audience certainly widens.
It is true for many international films in India. No wonder the keyword “Watch Parasite in HD” was trending in India after its historic Oscar win.
A surprising Indian short film got nominated at the Oscars and interestingly it is a Netflix film. We are talking about The Elephant Whisperers which is about 40 minutes long only.
It is a heart warming tale of a Tamil couple who take care of Elephants. It is also dubbed in various Indian languages, although the dubbing is very bad.
Netflix India doesn’t seem to acknowledge the documentary by promoting it aggressively. Netflix has just put an Oscar Nominee label on the film but it is never enough.
It’s high time they realize that the audience can be widened by an award as huge as the Oscars. Regardless, just like before we recommend watching The Elephant Whisperers but only in the original Tamil audio.
