Before you guys get confused, ‘KKK’ (in this context) means ‘Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham‘ – the direct-to-OTT released Nivin Pauly starrer that premiered on Disney+ Hotstar, on 12th November 2021. The film bombed in the digital space with many viewers and critics not finding the movie as funny as the filmmakers thought it actually was. ‘Thuramukham’, another highly anticipated Nivin Pauly starrer, which was supposed to get an OTT release, especially after ‘Malik’s’ direct-to-OTT success and ‘Marakkar: Lion of the Sea’s’ theatrical failure, has opted for a theatrical release. Could it have been influenced by Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham’s OTT performance?
Now, we are sure the creative minds behind ‘Thuramukham‘ will tell us that they are glad that this film is going to get a theatrical release. However, we are sure that if the theatrical option went away again, for a third time – even if we are 100% sure that theatre will open up in time for ‘Thuramukham’s’ current premier date – it would be streaming directly on an OTT platform within a couple of weeks. And we believe it has to do primarily with the two aforementioned Malayalam films, ‘Malik’ and ‘Marakkar’.
‘Malik’, ‘Marakkar’ and ‘Thuramukham’ were Malayalam films that were supposed to release in theatres earlier this year, during Eid, back in May. However, the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic hit Kerala very hard and it caused a lockdown and a theatre shut down, the latter of which lasted for six months. ‘Malik’ opted for a direct-to-OTT release and it broke a few Amazon Prime Video records. ‘Marakkar: Lion of The Arabian Sea’ held out and released in theatres earlier this month – and it bombed. Because of this, we expected ‘Thuramukham’ to opt for a direct-to-OTT release. Still, Malayalam films can make money in theatres now as ‘Kurup’ proved and as mentioned earlier ‘KKK’ failed on a major OTT platform as well. So that should have definitely had an impact in the decision making.
Nivin Pauly’s ‘Thuramukham’ will premiere in theatres on January 20th 2022.
