SonyLIV’s Malayalam and Tamil movie acquisitions since the last two years have been impressive to say the least. Some of the most critically acclaimed indie gems of Tamil and Malayalam cinema in the last two years dropped on SonyLIV. But quite evidently the streaming giant seems to have missed the mark with Jayasurya’s Eesho. Eesho dropped on SonyLIV on October 4th, ahead of Dussehra to extremely negative reception.
Looking back at some of the titles the streaming giant acquired in the last two years, the success ratio has been impeccable with a few occasional misses only. Be it Kadaisi Vyavasayi, Seththumaan, Gargi, Churuli, Bhoothakalam, Paka,Madhuram, Kaanekkane, Thinkalazhcha Nishchayam, Avasavyuham or Puzhu, almost all films found acceptance amongst the streaming audience one way or the other. Some of the titles that got mixed to negative reception include Innale Vare, Salute etc.. It has to be noted that Salute and Innale Vare still gathered a proportion of acceptance from its native audience which seems to be missing in Eesho’s case. The teaser of the film seemed really intriguing and there were expectations on the film considering sonyLIV’s association as well.
Eesho had everything going its way to be a good film, but it terribly falters. Leave aside grabbing the eyeballs of audience from other linguistic communities, Eesho even fails to impressing its own native audience. It is quite unfortunate for SonyLIV to go careless while acquiring titles in Malayalam especially considering their track record with quality when it comes to Malayalam movies. Let’s hope the streaming giant learns a lesson or two from this. Stay tuned for more updates.
