Popular singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh, who came into the national cinematic limelight with Abhishek Chaubey’s crime drama ‘Udta Punjab’, has now reportedly been roped in as the lead actor in a biopic film based on Amar Singh Chamkila.
The movie, tentatively titled ‘Chamkeela’, is being helmed by acclaimed filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, who had earlier acquired the rights for the biopic. The latest update has brought an end to the speculations that the film will feature Ranbir Kapoor, Ayushmann Khurrana, and Kartik Aaryan as the probable lead actors.
For those not in the know, Amar Singh Chamkila was an immensely popular Punjabi singer-composer, who was tragically assassinated along with his wife and two band members in March 1988. Amar Singh Chamkila is still considered one of the finest live stage performers that Punjab has ever produced. His songs were influenced by the Punjabi culture and society, especially its village life. The precise reason for his killing still remains an unsolved mystery.
Diljit Dosanjh was last seen in the Punjabi romantic comedy film ‘Honsla Rakh’ co-starring Shehnaaz Gill and Sonam Bajwa, and prior to that in the comedy-drama movie ‘Good Newws’, co-starring Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor, and Kiara Advani. It would be interesting to see Diljit Dosanjh, who is a passionate singer-songwriter himself and an admirer of Amar Singh Chamkila, essay the titular role in the latter’s biopic.
Diljit Dosanjh is busy nowadays filming for Honey Trehan’s next film which is set against the backdrop of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. He will be essaying the role of an activist in the film alongside Arjun Rampal.
The Amar Singh Chamkila biopic would be Imtiaz Ali’s next film after the 2020 romantic drama ‘Love Aaj Kal 2’. While his last film failed to impress the audiences, it cannot undermine the fact the gifted filmmaker is the man behind some fine films such as ‘Socha Na Tha’, ‘Jab We Met’, ‘Rockstar’, and ‘Highway’. So, his fans’ hopes would naturally be high for his upcoming directorial.
