In a piece of disappointing news, Netflix has canceled Horror genre supremo Mike Flanagan’s last release on Netflix- the teen horror series ‘Midnight Club’ after one season. While the show was much loved on social media, what was the reason for the cancellation? It was ‘how much’ love it received.
‘Midnight Club’ has been canceled by Netflix reportedly due to the series’ weak weekend viewing numbers. The series scored only 18.79M hours watched globally in its weekend, much lower than most of Netflix’s recent releases howsoever their critical reception was. For context, ‘Sandman’ which was recently renewed by Netflix clocked 69.48M in its first three days. It is well known that for Netflix, one of the most significant measures of their show/movie’s success is its first-weekend viewing numbers.
Yes, it is admittingly one of the weakest works of Mike Flanagan and is a bit uneven in certain episodes, but certainly is much better than a lot of other shows on Netflix which the streamer consistently renews. The series also had cliffhangers as well at its season 1’s end and fans are now worried that they will never get to hear the whole story.
Or will they?
In a grand gesture, Flanagan has reportedly revealed that if the series is not commissioned for a season 2, he will reveal all the major storylines on his social media. Some of the much-awaited reveals will be as to why only Ilanka and Kevin can see the two ghosts and as to what the true intention of Doctor Stanton is for running Brightcliffe after it was revealed she was an ex-member of the cult called Paragon.
The news of cancellation comes after the announcement that Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy (who had been working with Netflix under an overall deal) had shifted over to competitor Prime Video(via Amazon Studios). It is to be noted that Flanagan still has another upcoming project he is creating for Netflix- the horror drama miniseries ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’. The series is in post-production and will be Flanagan’s sixth and last collaboration with Netflix before he moves on with Prime Video.
The creator of big hits for Netflix like Gerald’s Game, The haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass, Flanagan will certainly be missed on Netflix. For updates regarding his upcoming and seemingly final Netflix series and more, stay tuned to Binged.
