Rajinikanth‘s recent theatrical release, Annaatthe (Peddanna in Telugu) received a thumbs down from the critics. The film was a complete washout at the Telugu box office. But thanks to the Diwali release window, the Rajinikanth starrer managed to put up excellent revenues at ticket counters across Tamil Nadu. The makers had recently announced that the film has grossed over Rs 150 crores in Tamil Nadu alone. But that doesn’t overhaul the fact that Annaatthe is one of the poorly conceived films from Tamil cinema in recent times.
Annaatthe is the story of a caring brother, played by Rajinikanth who goes to any extent to save his sister, played by Keerthy Suresh. This storyline is as outdated as it can get. If the lackluster story isn’t abysmal enough, the director Siva’s melodramatic narrative and cliched sequences make Annaatthe a tiring watch. However, the film, which went for an early OTT release is topping Netflix’s chart now.
Annaatthe is #1 on Netflix India, as strange as it may sound. The film offers disastrous content, but it is enjoying surprisingly good patronage from the OTT audience. Rajinikanth’s star power is there to be seen here. As it appears, the OTT audience are indeed aware of the insipid content that is in store, but they are giving it a try just for Rajinikanth.
Interestingly enough, neither Netflix nor the makers of Annaatthe extensively publicized the arrival of the film on OTT. But the film is still trending top on the OTT platform. Early OTT release might have helped the cause, we might say. Annaatthe is followed by Dhamaka, Most Eligible Bachelor, Red Notice, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, and other films on the Netflix India trending list.
