Disney has reportedly greenlighted the live-action adaptation of Gargoyles. According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Wan will collaborate with screenwriter Gary Dauberman for the live-action Gargoyles series. The former is globally known for this work on The Conjuring franchise. On the other hand, Dauberman has written The Nun and the Annabelle movies.
But Disney has become notorious for its treatment of live-action adaptations. Most of them have excelled in terms of CGI, visuals, cultural sensitivity, cast members, expanded storylines, and creating a strong nostalgic appeal. But they have also been criticized for their lack of originality, overreliance on nostalgia and CGI, lack of emotional depth, pacing issues, and missed opportunities for innovation or creativity. This raises concerns for ‘Gargoyles’ fans who grew up watching the original 1990s series.
The original animated series had a total of 78 half-hour episodes, aiding the makers in adding more depth to the storylines and character arcs. The duo of Wan and Dauberman will find it challenging to tackle this scenario, considering Disney’s unconventional TV strategy. In addition, they may face difficulty in faithfully translating the characters’ relationships and personalities from animation to live-action. Casting is another department that Disney has to look after. It will be hard for Wan and his team to pick up actors who are capable of embodying the unique traits of the Gargoyles. The studio needs to get the casting right, especially for Goliath and Hudson, voiced by Keith David and Ed Asner in the original series.
Gargoyles’ live-action adaptation may not live up to the fans’ expectations, as the original animated show has developed a cult following over the years. Also, Disney+ operates within the boundaries of the PG-13 environment. This may stop the streaming network from exploring mature themes in the live-action series.
We hope that Disney does justice to the original Gargoyles animated series with its upcoming live-action adaptation.
Produced by Walt Disney Television Animation, the Gargoyles animated series had voice talents like Keith David, Jeff Bennett, Ed Asner, Salli Richardson, Bill Fagerbakke, Frank Welker, and more. Stay tuned for more updates.
