In the modern context, Disney does indeed possess one of the most iconic souls, yet it still retains that essence of nostalgia. With Disney’s ‘Wish,’ as the company introduces a fresh new face to the universe, it appears that Disney is returning to its roots.
Though it may seem like a new face, the traits remain quite basic, and it borders on being somewhat boring.
While ‘Wish’ isn’t a tale of any princess, it will undoubtedly give you the vibe that it’s the next in line. If you stream the film, you’ll become acquainted with the same ‘adorable’ and ‘charming’ elements, and on a superficial level, that might seem like a good thing. However, it’s not.
Recent criticisms suggest Disney strayed from its iconic elements. “Wish” seeks to rediscover its essence with familiar elements, like a traditional villain and 2D animation, offering the nostalgic movie fans desire. There are also familiar elements such as an Animal sidekick and the typical ‘falling star’ reference.
However, one striking similarity between “Wish” and recent Disney movies like Frozen or Tangled lies in the heroine’s personality. Familiarity and nostalgia isn’t all bad, but it makes people question the diversity of creativity.
Even in terms of the most basic qualities of the princess, it took a stiff turn from the ‘Brave, charming and confident’ princess to the ‘awkward, less confident and clumsy’ characters which is, again, isn’t all bad but too monotonous. Even if you refer to films like Frozen and Tangled, you will face the same incident.
The modern princess of Disney is indeed fun but checked deeply, isn’t too different after all, and there lies the problem. You can definitely blame the lazy writing and a similar mold for all the characters for the birth of monotony.
Now, this is a formula that is working, and they have indeed struck gold with it. And it’s not bad either to create relatable personas over those who feel like the embodiment of perfection; still, it is the lack of variety that bothers us more than anything. Tangled came out as the first one from the mold, and the studio kept it as it is from that point.
Though Wish is bringing some iconic features back, including the animation style, if they wanted to work on the character development side of filmmaking, things would have been brighter, better.
