Animation means Disney—or at least, that’s what the industry believed for a long time. Disney movies equated to success, but this dominance has also harmed their position. Now, Disney faces competition from Netflix, Universal, and the latest champ, Pixar.
To be blunt, Disney’s throne is under threat.
To clear up any confusion, Inside Out is technically under the Disney banner since Pixar is owned by Disney. However, when it’s a Pixar film, people are genuinely excited. So, are Disney movies losing their charm?
Disney has changed a lot since its early years. Though change is the only constant, Disney’s changes are harming the quality of its films.
Not only do the films lack originality, but they have also fallen in quality when it comes to animation. Plus, people are tired of seeing the same characteristics in Disney princesses. Their recent venture, Wish, was great; it brought some changes and recalled Disney’s glory days.
Regarding Disney animations, the numbers have fallen so hard that other studios are actively working to fill the gap. Even this year, Disney, under their banner, had no animated movie. Studios like Toho, Universal, and Pixar are benefiting because of this.
So, is Disney still the king of animation?
In terms of resources, yes. But in terms of faith and quality, people are losing hope in Disney. The newer generations are moving beyond Disney animation. Besides that, it is the era of anime, where Disney practically has no say.
Disney was also caught in the AI allegations, which further eroded people’s trust.
Will Disney recover from this?
It looks tough, especially with so many emerging players in the market. Disney won’t ruin the industry, but it can surely regain people’s trust, which would be a good start for the platform.
