Though the management has adapted a more evil persona, Disney still plays a critical role in Hollywood, especially in terms of animation films. They are not only pioneers in the field but also excel at it.
Despite the theme of ‘Change is the only constant,’ Disney has moved away from what made them the iconic Disney. As a long legacy, they have established some signature styles that Disney doesn’t use anymore. Particularly from their successful film “Tangled,” they created a mold, setting aside experimentation.
Now, ‘Wish’ plays a pivotal part in the story, bringing a breath of fresh air. Surprisingly, the animators opted for an older mold and sets of qualities for the main character. They didn’t stop there, as the creators chose their older 2D animation style. It’s still a 3D animated film, but the style is inspired by the 2D era.
This trait of Disney is a sentimental one for most viewers. Will we see more 2D-inspired animation from Disney?
During an interview with Wish’s co-director Chris Buck, he talked about whether Disney will consider going back to the older style.
“I think, absolutely. This film was inspired, obviously, by the legacy and the 2D animation. The look has a somewhat 2D feel with the lines on the characters. We did early tests with Star as 2D. But yeah, I think we keep exploring.”
Later, he added, “The nice thing is, we started with some shorts; you got ‘Paperman,’ ‘Feast,’ and ‘Far From the Tree’ that explored the look we adapted, and we kept evolving. We had never done it in a full feature before. So that was going to be a challenge. I would say absolutely. You just don’t know what the next thing is going to be.”
The 100th anniversary would have been an ideal moment for Disney Animation to release a new 2D animated film, but “Wish” incorporated 3D elements to celebrate the studio’s legacy.
Unfortunately, Disney’s 2013 layoff of its hand-drawn division casts doubt on a significant resurgence of 2D projects. “Wish” had the potential to reignite 2D animation, particularly with a sequel to “The Princess & the Frog,” but progress appears stagnant.
The upcoming Disney+ series, “Tiana,” featuring the beloved princess, offers hope for 2D animation enthusiasts, yet details remain sparse. While “Wish” didn’t fully spark a 2D revival, Tiana’s series might provide a glimpse into the cherished art form’s future.
