Disney has finally learned that sometimes less is more, as shown by its latest change of plans. The company has decided to decrease the number of Marvel projects in the future. Since the release of Avengers: Endgame (2019), the MCU has been moving forward rapidly. While the Multiverse Saga has bestowed some exciting and heart-touching moments to the fans, it has also received severe criticism for losing focus, which resulted from Marvel’s attempt to release too many projects for the Disney+ streaming platform in the last 2-3 years.
During Disney’s Q1 2024 earnings call, Bob Iger revealed the production house’s plans for Marvel Studios. He disclosed that the company has shifted its attention towards prominent franchises and sequels, with a particular focus on Marvel. Iger acknowledged that Marvel lost its momentum due to its effort to release a great amount of content in a short period, after 2019. He added that Marvel would start focusing on slowing its pace of releasing movies and TV shows.
“In our zeal to greatly increase volume partially tied to this wanting to chase more global subs for our streaming platform, some of our studios lost a little focus. So the first step that we’ve taken is that we’ve reduced volume, we reduced output, particularly in Marvel,” Bob Iger said.
The reason behind the immense success of The Infinity Saga is its primary focus on the development of films. In nearly 11 years of its run, we received only 23 films. However, this scenario drastically changes in the case of The Multiverse Saga. Phase 4 alone received a total of 18 projects within a span of two years, almost reaching The Infinity Saga’s output. To make things more complicated, Phase 5 has failed to create a strong impact on the Marvel fanbase, thanks to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels.
The above-mentioned scenario automatically puts immeasurable pressure on Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool 3, which also features the return of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. The third Deadpool project can aid the MCU and Disney to earn back fans’ trust and respect. It is the only MCU flick scheduled to come out this year. This gives Kevin Feige’s team some time to cool off and focus more on what’s more important and beneficial for the superhero franchise. Stay tuned for more updates.
