A few hours ago, National Geographic dropped the teaser for their upcoming 6-part original series, which they are making with Disney+, titled ‘Welcome To Earth‘. The web series will follow Will Smith in a once-in-a-lifetime journey as he travels the globe and explores its greatest wonders. The series will be released by the end of 2021 and it will happen, just in time, to challenge all other major OTT companies, including their latest “Media coalition” rivals, Warner Bros. Discovery.
The creation of Warner Bros. Discovery was a surprise to many but was a long time coming. AT&T was doing a poor job, especially with the way they handled the DC Extended Universe and the introduction of their streaming platform HBOMax. Discovery has a better idea of how to create quality content and the merger is a Godsend to executives, employees and fans alike. However, this merger means that Discovery will now be focusing on the creation of quality content (in the coming years) as well as continue to create their routinely brilliant real-world content. This leaves other streaming platforms to pick up the slack.
Disney+ has taken the initiative and have released the teaser for their own reality series (of the wildlife/world discovering pseudo-documentary genre) featuring Will Smith to compete against the likes of Discovery, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. While the latter two are still “novices” in this field (quality of the released content is good though), Discovery+ and Disney+ have an edge. The former because of its tenure in the genre, the latter because of its ownership of National Geographic, which also has a great tenure as well. It will be an interesting few years, to see how the landscape of streaming will change based on how well this specific genre does virtually – especially since it appeals to a wide demographic around the world.
The Welcome To Earth web series is expected to premiere on Disney+ Hotstar in December. Check out the previously mentioned teaser below:
