In a strategic move following the footsteps of Warner Bros. Discovery, Disney has decided to remove under-performing titles from its streaming services, aiming to write off nearly $2 billion from its bottom line. The decision was announced by Disney CFO Christine McCarthy during the company’s recent earnings call, where she stated that Disney would be reviewing the TV series and films on its various platforms and planned to remove “certain content from streaming platforms.” The removal of these titles is expected to result in an impairment charge ranging between $1.5 billion and $1.8 billion.
Over 30 shows are set to be removed starting from May 26, marking the first round of reductions. Although these titles will vanish from the platforms, sources indicate that Disney may explore other avenues to make the programming available, such as digital sell-through platforms.
The decision to remove these titles has received criticism from some showrunners and creators.
