Disney+Hotstar’s upcoming Tamil feature ‘Mookuthi Amman’, looks to be a riot if the trailer for the feature is any indication. Featuring “The Lady Superstar”, Nayanthara as Mookuthi Amman, the titular character, she is set to wreak havoc as a Goddess (literally) against false Godmen. This will be Nayanthara’s second portrayal of a Goddess on-screen; she portrayed Goddess Sita in the film ‘Sri Rama Rajya’. The OTT set0to-release feature will premier next month on the streaming platform, during Diwali.
The upcoming Tamil movie is set up to be a satirical view on worship and devotion; about the current situation in India and their worship of deities. The film follows a reporter from Nanjil TV, Engels Ramasamy (portrayed by RJ Balaji) and his family consisting of his mother and three sisters. His mother (portrayed comically by Urvashi) has high hopes for her daughters’ futures and decides to go to their family temple so that their “stagnant lives can be rich again” (also meant literally).
The brother and three sisters are reluctant to go pray with their mother, especially since she spends a long time praying and asking for blessings from their Goddess. Eventually tired from the mother’s pestering, they say that they will only go to the family temple if the Goddess herself comes and asks them. Lo and Behold, the family Goddess, Mookuthi Amman (portrayed by Nayanthara) comes to earth and meets them, changing their lives forever.
The film is looking to be another feature, like ‘PK’, asking questions on various aspects of prayers as well as the rise of various con-men in India, who label themselves as Godmen. Since our protagonist is a journalist/reporter, we are expecting a few on-screen showdowns between the titular Goddess and these Godmen.
‘Mookuthi Amman’ is set to release on Disney+Hotstar on Diwali, 14th November 2020.
