Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings fame, director Destin Daniel Cretton and star Michelle Yeoh have reunited for the upcoming adaptation of American Born Chinese graphic novel by Disney+. The latter played Ying Nan in the Shang-Chi movie, released last year. Also, she is a part of many big forthcoming releases including Minions: The Rise of Gru and Avatar 2.
Deadline first revealed that Yeoh will portray the character of Guanyin in the series, “an unassuming auntie who helps her nephew Wei-Chen navigate the challenges of American high school while maintaining her secret identity as the all-powerful Buddhist bodhisattva of Compassion.”
The upcoming Disney+ show will focus on the life of Jin Wang. He is an immigrant, residing in the U.S. and trying to manage his high school life in addition to his other life problems. Out of nowhere, he encounters a new foreign student on the very first day of high school. But his world turns upside down after he becomes a part of an all-out war among the prominent Chinese mythological deities.
Gene Luen Wang is responsible for penning down the acclaimed graphic novel. He is also serving as one of the executive producers of the series along with Asher Goldstein. On the other hand, Kelvin Yu is will run the show.
Disney+ has confirmed that the American Born Chinese series will be an action-comedy instalment. 20th Century Television will handle the production duties of the show. Apart from Michelle Yeoh, Daniel Wu, Yeo Yann Yann, and Chin Han are also a part of the series.
