Honestly, Disney should get its horoscope checked, as it isn’t having a good time at the box office. The audience not only rejected its universal affair with “The Marvels” but also, in the Thanksgiving weekend, its wish to conquer it became unsuccessful.
Disney’s recent Marvel venture wasn’t the most successful, managing to register the worst-ever MCU opening. Now, its reign of failure continues in animated content as well, as “Wish” saw a dip from the projected numbers.
“Wish” does tick a lot of boxes and even goes back to the old Disney era. From the animation style to the storyline, it makes you feel that it’s from the pre-“Tangled” era. Despite that, Disney is lately failing to attract new audiences, especially Gen Z, and that is being reflected in the recent set of movies.
Disney’s previous Thanksgiving ventures have always been successful, and practically, this year’s one isn’t a disappointment either. But, trapped with competitions such as “Hunger Games” and “Napoleon,” “Wish” was bound to underperform.
The saga of unpredictability in the box office also continues, as “Wish” was previously projected to hit a $35 million mark on a normal weekend. Considering the Thanksgiving weekend, it was supposed to gross between $45 million and $55 million.
But in reality, the animated film grossed a $31.7 million mark, raising not only question marks for the studio but also eyebrows. “Wish” secured an impressive $17.3 million from 27 international markets, constituting 40% of its eventual global release. With this international success, the film’s overall box office earnings reached $49 million, highlighting its widespread appeal and strong performance on the global stage.
Though this year’s one has been a mile ahead of last year’s “Strange World,” as the film grossed a disappointing $18 million. “Encanto,” the 2021 venture, came out as one blockbuster animation, opening with $40 million, that too during the pandemic.
“Wish,” again, doesn’t really appeal to the global audience; its popularity is properly limited to the US audience. This is also causing an overall mediocre global opening, and it is indeed a part of a disappointing trend.
