Disney’s renewing Percy Jackson and the Olympians for Season 2 was bound to happen, thanks to Season 1’s all-around impressive performance. Consisting of eight episodes, the first season debuted on December 19, 2023, and reached its conclusion on January 30, 2024. During the run, the series mostly received positive reviews from critics and viewers, who praised the show’s departure from the infamous Logan Lerman’s Percy Jackson films and its effort to follow Rick Riordan’s novels as closely as possible. In terms of viewership, Season 1 performed impressively, given its pilot episode was watched by over 13 million viewers on Disney+, according to Variety. However, it also faced some backlash from the fans, who showed dissatisfaction regarding some elements of the series. This certainly puts pressure on showrunners Rick Riordan and Jonathan E. Steinberg to deliver a better Season 2.
Despite being better than the movie adaptations, the Percy Jackson series suffered from noticeable flaws. Over Season 1’s run, many viewers consistently complained about the short length of episodes and rushed storylines, giving little or no time for emotional response or some sort of character development. In addition, Percy’s childhood and his initial days at the Camp were not explored properly. These elements needed to be fleshed out more, which would have enabled viewers to strengthen their emotional connection with the series.
One of the brightest points of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series is the leading trio, comprising Walker Scobell (Percy), Leah Sava Jeffries (Annabeth), and Aryan Simhadri (Grover). All three young actors performed brilliantly in the series. Moreover, Season 1 benefits from impressive visuals, accurate characterisations, and Bear McCreary’s outstanding score. While it has its moments, Season 1 ultimately fails to reach its true potential.
Given Disney’s recent renewal of the show, Riordan and Steinberg have a great opportunity to analyse Season 1’s flaws deeply and not repeat them in Season 2. We do not know when Percy Jackson Season 2 will come out on the Disney+ streaming platform. The production house may soon reveal its release window. Stay tuned for more updates.
