From India to the global stage, one consistent theme for Disney has been its struggles in the realm of sports ventures. In India, they initially held a strong position in the market with their Hotstar venture, which proved to be a success. However, this changed with the entry of a formidable player, JioCinema.
In terms of global market, Disney isn’t looking any good either.
Disney’s most recent reports reveal a significant setback in the company’s sports division, with profits falling by 20% over the past three quarters. The sports division witnessed a decrease in its operating income, plummeting to $1.48 billion. Additionally, its revenue saw a decline, marking a 1.3% decrease to $13.2 billion.
In contrast, the new ‘entertainment’ sector, encompassing everything except sports, generated $31 billion in revenue but yielded only $1.2 billion in profits during the same period.
Disney has grappled with challenges in its sports programming due to a shift away from traditional cable TV. To adapt to evolving viewer preferences, the media company is actively developing an ESPN streaming service to cater to those who no longer rely on the brand’s cable channel.
The decline in income can be primarily attributed to losses within the sports division of Star India. When considered in isolation, ESPN’s operating income amounted to $1.894 billion.
Concerning Star India, a substantial portion of their losses can be traced back to JioCinema acquiring most of their rights. Notably, even the ICC Men’s World Cup, which garners substantial viewership, is available for free on the JioCinema platform, contributing to the overall loss.
Regarding Disney’s ESPN venture, there is a significant focus on the future of ESPN’s streaming services. Disney envisions offering the ESPN channel directly to customers as a standalone option, separate from bundled packages.
The downturn of the sports division can be attributed to what seems like a lack of strategic direction from Disney. They failed to secure a partner for the ESPN venture despite its prominence and operated without one. Furthermore, despite the success of their Hotstar wing, they did not capitalize on this achievement.
Presently, ESPN faces challenges with what appears to be directionless management. Nevertheless, with a more ambitious and strategic approach, it still holds substantial potential. After all, it was once at the pinnacle of sports streaming.
