Disney+ has announced the commencement of its first ‘Star Original’ series ‘The Good Mothers’. This new Italian mafia series is part of Disney+ and Star’s first European originals slate.
Written by BAFTA winner Stephen Butchard (‘The Last Kingdom’, ‘Baghdad Central’), ‘The Good Mothers’ is not a regular mafia series showcasing the internal workings of mafia gangs but tells the story from the perspective of women associated with such gangs.
‘The Good Mothers’, a six part series, is a true story of three courageous woman inside the notorious Calabrian ‘Ndrangheta mafia and how they worked with newly-minted female prosecutor, Alessandra Cerreti, to bring down down the criminal empire.
Based on the book by Foreign Press Association award-winning journalist Alex Perry, ‘The Good Mothers’ was originally to be produced by House Productions (‘Brexit: The Uncivil War‘) in English but Disney later decided to bring Wildside (‘We Are Who We Are’, ‘My Brilliant Friend’), the Fremantle-backed Italian producer, and produce it in Italian, to bring more authenticity.
The series will be executive produced by Juliette Howell and Tessa Ross for House Productions, and Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Gangarossa for Wildside. Talking about the series Howell, in her statement to a prominent media house, said, “Stephen has written beautifully crafted scripts which don’t celebrate or glorify male violence, and don’t focus on the more operational detail of a global crime syndicate. The Good Mothers tells us about the women, not as accessories, but as fully rounded characters in their own right; as wives, mothers and daughters who show grit, determination, and astounding courage in the face of the murderous misogyny of their husbands, fathers, and brothers. It is an intimate and authentic emotional thriller that gives these women and their children a voice.”
Disney+ has not announced the release date for Italian mafia series ‘The Good Mothers’ as of yet.
