No one can handle offbeat humour and unconventional storytelling better than The Coen Brothers, Ethan and Joel. The directional duo has delivered some of the most mesmerising and highly entertaining cinematic masterpieces, such as Fargo (1996), The Ladykillers (2004), No Country for Old Men (2007), True Grit (2010), The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018), and many more. One of their films, The Big Lebowski, also deserves a watch.
The Big Lebowski revolves around an avid bowler and unemployed slacker, Jeff Lebowski, aka “The Dude”. Out of nowhere, he becomes part of a bizarre kidnapping plot where the kidnappers assault him as a result of mistaken identity. Soon, Jeff discovers that there is a millionaire whose name is also Jeffery Lebowski. The millionaire’s wife owes a large amount of money to a gangster. This scenario forces The Dude to find out the wife with the help of his friends, Donny and Walter. However, the more he tries to unravel the situation, the more it gets dangerous.
Jeff Bridges delivers one of his career-best performances in The Big Lebowski. His quirky mannerisms and slacker attitude wins our heart. John Goodman also shines as Walter, successfully bringing dark humour and a manic intensity to his character. Steve Buscemi, as Donny, does a fine job too. In addition, the supporting cast, consisting of Julianne Moore, John Turturro, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Sam Elliot, and many more, also deliver strong performances.
The Coen Brothers brilliantly handle the film with their stylish direction and utilise their idiosyncratic characters to the fullest. It currently stands at a rating of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 186 reviews.
You can stream The Big Lebowski on Prime Video. Enjoy!
