Steven Spielberg is undoubtedly one of the very best when it comes to feature direction. He has delivered numerous cinematic masterpieces in his illustrious filmmaking career. The man has helmed classics, such as Jaws (1975), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Jurassic Park (1993), Saving Private Ryan (1998), Lincoln (2012), West Side Story (2021), and more. Though, some of his films deserve more recognition. And one of those flicks is War Horse (2011).
Adapted from Michael Morpurgo’s novel, War Horse revolves around the bond between a young man, Albert, and a horse, Joey, during World War I. The latter is bought by the British Army, forcing the poor creature to endure the horrors of war and encounter different people throughout Europe. Albert enlists himself to find his friend. Amidst the war and the chaos, Joey brings out the best in those he meets.
The film beautifully explores themes of love, friendship, and bravery. Though, some may find it overly sentimental. Yet, it manages to touch our hearts. Additionally, it treasures beautiful production design and impressive cinematography.
The cast, consisting of Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Peter Mullan, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Tom Hiddleston, does a wonderful job in the film.
War Horse has a critic score of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 242 reviews. On Metacritic, it scored 72 out of 100.
Steven Spielberg’s War Horse is streaming on SonyLIV. Enjoy!
