‘Pudhupettai’ is a wonderful crime drama From Dhanush and Selvaraghavan and has the quintessential nature of the rooted, violent Tamil movies that talk about crime in a very different way.
Like many Tamil films, Pudhupettai is the origin story of a deadly gangster feared by all. A young man from the slums of Pudhupettai runs away from his house after hus mother is murdered by his own father. He is soon arrested for false allegations and is introduced to the deadly crime world. Kumar, the man, is recruited by a local gangster. He soon gains the position of the right hand man of the gangster and rises up in the underworld.
Pudhupettai came out in 2006 and had a great opening at the box office, but later on it went on to have an average run, owing to the violent visuals of the film. The screenplay of the movie was written by Selvaraghavan and Balakumaran. Selvaraghavan is known for films like ‘Naane Varuvean’, ‘Malaal’, ‘Mayakkam Enna’ and many others. He is a frequent collaborator with Dhanush and the two of them worked in multiple box office hits.
Dhanush is of course the life of Pudhupettai. And there are powerful performances from other actors too. There are actors like Bala Singh, Azhagam Perumal, Sonia Agarwal, Prudhvi Raj and more. The visuals are beautiful and the cinematography is handled by Arvind Krishna. The music is given by Yuvan Shankar Raja.
‘Pudhupettai’ is available to watch on Prime Video, Disney+Hotstar and Aha.
