Mike Flanagan is a horror maestro. His remarkable portfolio of work in the genre says it all. He has become a distinguished figure in contemporary horror, and his productions, both films and TV shows, are recognised for their mesmerising atmosphere, well-developed characters, and profound emotional impact. The filmmaker has helmed bone-chilling projects, like Ouija: Origin of Evil, Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, and many more. When it comes to television series, he has created hit shows like The Haunting series, Midnight Mass, and The Midnight Club, all streaming on Netflix. This is why we recommend you all to watch one of his classic entries to the horror genre, Hush.
Written and helmed by Flanagan, Hush is a slasher flick starring Kate Siegel, who also co-wrote the project with the director. The film revolves around Maddie Young, a deaf-mute horror novelist who wants to strengthen her career by finishing her new book. However, a mysterious killer has other plans for him. She lost her hearing and speaking abilities after suffering from bacterial meningitis in her childhood days.
Hush treasures strong performances, particularly from Siegel, and well-placed horror moments. Additionally, the film benefits from clever usage of sound and minimum dialogue. This film offered an early hint of Flanagan’s directing abilities and proved that slashers are not as ugly-looking as people think. They still work well if treated appropriately.
The film currently stands at a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 40 reviews.
Kate Siegel is Flanagan’s favourite actor. She has appeared in many of the director’s projects and played prominent roles in all of them. Her work in the horror genre has earned her the title of a “scream queen”.
Mike Flanagan’s Hush is available on Netflix. Stay tuned for more updates.
