HBO and Warner Bros Discovery are receiving tons of fan backlash after announcing the Harry Potter reboot. Potterheads have gone up and arms about the upcoming reboot of the beloved fantasy adventure franchise. And we get that! They have pointed out several reasons why the reboot is unnecessary. Many believe the forthcoming series will not work without the involvement of the original cast, particularly Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson. Additionally, we cannot rule out the possibility of viewers being biased about the upcoming adaptation, especially if they love the original film series with their hearts.
Several prominent novels and films have been adapted multiple times in the past. But not all of them turned out to be masterpieces. Many of Jane Austen’s novels, like Pride and Prejudice and Little Women, have been adapted multiple times. Bradley Cooper’s ‘A Star Is Born’ serves as the fourth American adaptation of the plot, after the 1937 original flick and its 1954 and 1976 reboots. Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story is also a reboot of the original 1961 film. Many of these adaptations have done justice to their source materials or original entries. Should we expect the same with HBO’s reboot of Harry Potter?
Fans have strong emotional attachments with the original HP films as they grew up watching the movies and their cast members. Also, we cannot ignore the possibility of new child actors facing harassment or slander from the fanbase. Their careers may drown before even entering the acting world. Plus, the recent views of author J. K. Rowling regarding the trans community have already put her in a bad light. Many reports have stated that she will be a part of the series to ensure it remains true to her source material. Her involvement with the project complicates this scenario.
Many believe the reboot series is an unnecessary addition to the beloved franchise. Some even think it is nothing except a desperate attempt to save the franchise after butchering it with the Fantastic Beasts spin-off films.
If we look on the bright side, chances are that the upcoming reboot may bestow new storytelling opportunities to makers, enabling them to focus on characters that were not fully explored in the film series, such as Cho Chang, Bill Weasley, Charlie Weasley, James and Lilly Potter, and many more. Additionally, the show may dazzle the audience with amazing special effects and unique visual styles.
Overall, the idea of rebooting the iconic Harry Potter film series seems risky rather than intriguing. The upcoming WBD and HBO show is expected to have seven seasons. Rowling will co-executively produce the reboot project with Ruth Kenley-Letts and Neil Blair. Stay tuned for more updates.
