Blumhouse has announced that they are planning to expand ‘The Exorcist’ as a franchise. It has not even been one year since the wonderful William Friedkin died, and the production house is again up to such blasphemy. We all know how Friedkin hated the so-called sequel to ‘The Exorcist’ and called it an abomination in the world of cinema. He was not okay with this money-making attitude with franchises and with a new Exorcist movie, it will be disrespecting the creative opinions of the director.
Popular director Mike Flanagan has been roped in to write, direct and produce the movie and he has said that he will be having a ‘radically new take’ on the movie. He has said, “The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying within its universe.” Mike Flanagan is a well known name in the genre of horror and he has given wonderful gems like ‘The Fall Of The House Of Usher’ and ‘Doctor Sleep’. So there is still a silver lining amidst all the hopelessness.
We have had so many Exorcist movies and so poorly written and directed that it seems impossible that any other movie will do justice to the original one. With David Gordon Green, Renny Harlin and other directors having crappy takes on the Exorcist, fans too have been exhausted. But the movie will be made no matter what, and we can only hope that this time it is good.
