Binged has always promoted the usage and creation of documentaries. We believe that it is a great way of storytelling and India never really explored its potential. In the last few years, we saw Netflix India coming up with some great documentaries, and it helped us consume some content that would be unimaginable for the audiences.
However, there are some severe problems with the way documentaries function. There is absolutely no doubt that the scale and spread of the OTT industry has spread extensively but the content has not spread in the same ratio. It is true at least in the case of documentaries.
There are only a few urban centres that are serving as the hotspot of documentary consumption. It is only the educated and elite urbans who are watching documentaries and it needs to be addressed.
This stark divide exists because the tier 2 and 3 cities do not have a culture of watching documentaries. This is fine but the OTT platforms also need to revamp this notion by making content that resonates with the audiences of India irrespective of the place they come from.
Prime Video is also doing remarkable things in this field, and let’s hope that they make good Massey documentary content that they are famous for in terms of fiction series.
