Screenwriter, scripting workshop trainer for the Star brand, David Freeman is a firm advocate of the power of the digital medium.
The writer, who was recently in Hyderabad for a session on the advent of OTT platforms, gave his tips about writing a good script for a web series and minced no words as he conversed with Binged.com:
“I feel the movies (system) is totally screwed up. A lot of aspirant directors and writers are wasting many years at the movies in return for almost nothing. The digital medium is a boon to them, they should realize this sooner than never,”
He also had a word of caution for them:
“To last long in the digital medium, it’s important to be burning with passion. Your focus should be greater because you’re not competing with a local pool of talent alone but filmmakers across the globe. Make use of all the freedom to tell the story that’s growing within you. However, as a first step, cast a spell on the producer with the way you pitch a story.”
Besides the challenges, David Freeman insists that the digital medium doesn’t care two hoots for barriers or class:
“Everyone has an equal opportunity to be a pioneer, locally and globally. There’s so much demand for content across so many platforms but the supply from the writers, surprisingly, hasn’t lived up to the buzz and excitement. The ‘deepening’ technique is the key to success here – be it a character’s backstory or a plot.”
