“Khel Khel Mein” could be the next comic sensation in India, and as the trailer created hype, it was quite clear that the audience wanted to revisit Akshay Kumar’s comic side. However, what is holding the film back is the Censor Board certification. While we must keep in mind that a UA rating can provide major exposure to a larger audience, it may also limit the film’s edginess.
When fans saw the trailer, it was expected that the film would have a bit of an edge. The Indian audience is becoming accustomed to adult comedy, thanks to the rise of OTT platforms.
For instance, a film like “Crew,” which wasn’t expected to be a hit in the 2019 market, found success as audiences became more aware of dark humor and adult comedies. This shows that viewers’ tastes are changing. It’s not that the audience doesn’t like clean comedy; if done correctly, clean comedies can be some of the most hilarious acts. Akshay Kumar’s earlier work produced some of these gems.
But the hardcore fanbase of Akshay Kumar is aging, and they would likely appreciate the edge. Plus, when the trailer dropped, it promised a bit of an adult comic touch, which is still possible, but the UA certification might be a turnoff for some fans.
Being a UA comedy, the film will definitely attract a broader audience, but the question remains: is it the right kind of audience? Independence Day will be a competitive market, and “Stree 2” is by far the strongest competition. If “Khel Khel Mein” delivered the adult comedy spice, it could have been a strong contender in the market.
