The debate over Master’s theatrical versus OTT release is still generating the maximum buzz among the trade circles. Two main reasons are why it is so. We looked at one previously, and now it’s time to present the other.
From the official statement, it seems clear that the makers of Master are looking at a Pongal 2021 release. It is a big festival season and a movie featuring Vijay could strike gold with the right word of mouth.
There are a few issues here with the release, though. The first one is the occupancies across the cinemas. The government has capped it. The second is competition. Many films target Pongal festival to make an impact at the box office. If we put the two together, Master cannot perform to its optimum as the screens have to be shared.
The makers of Master, sensing the same, are hoping for a clear window without any competition for the festival. It is what the finer print of the official statement means. They want a solo Pongal appearance. It is the best-case scenario they can hope for considering the problems that could come ahead (in the summer).
Does Master deserve a solo release? Ideally, that would not be necessary, but as these are extraordinary circumstances, it should be given a chance. A solo release doesn’t ensure a mammoth success, but it provides the best possible shot at it.
However, the solo release could be possible only in Tamil Nadu. It shouldn’t be expected in other Southern film industries. For example, in Telugu, many films have announced their presence for Sankranthi 2021.
It will be an interesting decision to take not just for the makers of Master, but other movies as well. A normal deluge of films followed by a biggie would have been an ideal scenario, but it isn’t happening in the Tamil film industry. Let’s see what occurs finally in the crunch time.
Master stars Thalapathy Vijay in the lead. Vijay Sethupathi plays the antagonist. Lokesh Kanagaraj of Khaidi fame direct the mass entertainer.
The theatrical trailer and with it, the release date of Master is expected to be out on January 1st as New Year’s gift for fans. Let’s wait and see what the makers have in the store. Meanwhile, watch this space for exciting updates.
