We are less than a week away from getting all episodes of Terminator Zero, Netflix’s anime series inspired by James Cameron’s Terminator franchise. The series’ latest NSFW trailer has certainly taken the blood, action, gore, and violence to a whole new level. But what really stands out from the latest clip is its acceptance of the franchise’s horror aspect, something we haven’t seen for a long time.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, showrunner Mattson Tomlin discussed the show’s horror side in detail and shared how the first Terminator (1984) movie used to scare him as a child.
“When I got the call to come play in the Terminator universe, my association with this franchise is not action. That’s there, and I know the second one is the greatest action movie of all time. I’m there, I’m with you. But that’s separate from the primal connection that I have with it, which is this gave me nightmares, so that I had to just follow that,” Tomlin said.
While being marketed as a sci-fi flick, the first Terminator movie also had many horror elements. Right from Arnold Schwarzeneggers’s entry, the film starts getting grittier and more relentless and successfully gives a strong sense of paranoia and dread when it comes to discussing the humans’ doomed future. Plus, we get a stone-faced leading man in the form of Schwarzenegger whose emotionless, cold, and petrifying persona shakes us to the very bottom of our cores. But this all changed in Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991), which was more action-packed, fun, and light-hearted than its predecessor.
It’s great to see that Terminator Zero is not holding back anything in any department, particularly when it comes to its horror elements. Another thing that makes the upcoming Netflix anime unique is that it doesn’t shed light on The Connors at all. Let’s be honest, folks! We have lost the capacity to endure another Terminator story featuring the Connors. They have been central to the franchise for decades. Now, it’s time to focus on a completely new story with a new set of characters and watch an unpredictable but gripping storyline unfold in front of our eyes.
We may also get a slew of villainous Terminators in the forthcoming Mattson Tomlin creation. But the ultimate villain should be Timothy Olyphant’s Terminator. The actor’s version looks different from the previous versions of Terminator, such as T-800, T-1000, T-X, and more, yet it appears equally menacing and lethal. Stay tuned for more updates. It will arrive on Netflix on August 19.
