Parents television and media council (PTC) criticized the decision of including new six TV MA rated marvel television series of Disney Plus. PTC said Disney plus always marketed as family friendly and this move will “forever tarnish” their family brand. But actually, the Marvel TV series like Daredevil, Punisher, Jessica jones are incredibly popular and the fans welcomed the decision. It is not like these shows are promoting violence or contain hard core sex scenes, and it doesn’t make any sense when these shows are labelled as not good for family audiences when a show like “Invincible” which made snapping necks and throwing intestines common were streamed in Disney Plus.
Disney’s attempt to reduce the intensity of characters like Wanda, Loki, US Agent who were more ruthless and darker is evident in Disney Plus shows. But lately it seems Disney are taking a different path and embracing the exact tone of these characters, like the upcoming “Moon Knight” which already promised the show won’t be like the other series. And when they decided to add Marvel TV shows like Daredevil, Punisher, Iron Fist etc it was clear they are taking a different path.
But the statements like “What comes next, adding live striptease performances in Fantasyland at Disney World ?” from PTC really exaggerates the situation. And stereotyping family audiences by saying they will only watch pleasant and feel-good contents is really unnecessary. Every audience has the right to choose what they watch. And the decision of Disney Plus will not affect their family brand where there are other tons of contents out there in Disney Plus to choose. Who knows, there might be a family who would love to see Daredevil fighting bad guys.
