Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe Award winner Sacha Baron Cohen needs no introduction and so does his works. While most of his films and series are quite notable we are here to remind you of one of his underrated Netflix limited series that shouldn’t be missed.
We are talking about Gideon Raff’s espionage drama ‘The Spy’ that started streaming on Netflix back in 2019. The six episode mini series is adapted from the book L’espion qui venait d’Israël (English: The Spy Who Came from Israel) by Uri Dan and Yeshayahu Ben Porat.
Inspired from real life events and based on the life of Israel’s top Mossad spy Eli Cohen, whose role is played by Sacha Baron Cohen, ‘The Spy’ is set in the 1960s. The series follows Israeli clerk-turned-secret agent Cohen as he goes deep undercover inside Syria on a perilous, years long mission to spy for Mossad.
‘The Spy’ received largely positive reviews upon its release. Special mentions were made for Cohen who was praised for his brilliant acting in it. He also received a nomination for ‘The Spy’ in the Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film category at the 77th Golden Globe Awards.
Created and directed by Gideon Raff, ‘The Spy’ stars Sacha Baron Cohen, Noah Emmerich, Hadar Ratzon Rotem, Alexander Siddig, Waleed Zuaiter and Naseem Lyes among others. If you haven’t seen ‘The Spy’ yet, do catch it on Netflix as the mini-series format makes it a perfect binge watch for the weekend.
