Before serving as a helmer, Christopher McQuarrie was a scriptwriter. His latest directional feature, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One, might have fallen flat at the global box office. But that does not make him a bad helmer. In his early writing days, the man wrote scripts for many films, including The Usual Suspects, which is streaming on Netflix currently.
Helmed by X-Men fame Bryan Singer, The Usual Suspects revolves around Roger “Verbal” Kint, who happens to be the only survivor of a brutal massacre on a ship in the region of San Pedro Bay. During his interrogation with the cops, Kint reveals the events that led to the massacre. He also discloses his involvement with other criminals. This scenario forces the cops to start looking for the guys who are a part of the criminal underworld. As the movie progresses, we see twists and turns emerging swiftly right before our very eyes, successfully building the foundation of a mind-blowing and iconic climax.
Critics have praised the film’s usage of suspenseful moments and twists. McQuarrie bagged the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. On the other hand, Kevin Spacy won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
The Usual Suspects has established itself as a cult classic. It currently stands at a fresh rating of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 80 reviews. It stars Stephen Baldwin, Gabriel Byrne, Kevin Pollak, Kevin Spacey, Benicio Del Toro, Giancarlo Esposito, Suzy Amis, and more. It is currently available on Netflix.
