Movie fanatics by now would know Indonesian horror is more like a sub-genre of its own like Turkish horror. They churn out interesting slasher and cult horrors and have even celebrated horror universes of their own. Ivanna on Amazon Prime Video is one such solid slasher horror. Ivanna is a spin-off from Danur 2: Maddah and a part of the celebrated Danur Universe. The film released in its domestic territory on July 14th to commercial success and is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video India as well.
The 2022 Indonesian horror thriller is directed by Kimo Stamboel and written by Lele Laila. The film story is adapted from a novel titled ‘Ivanna van dijk‘ by Risa Saraswati. Her debut novel Danur has a huge following besides multiple movie adaptations.
Ivanna follows Ambar and Dika as the siblings move out after their parents’ death. The siblings never thought of what was supposedly a new start would turn out to be their lives’ biggest misery. Ambar possesses an ability to sense the unseen and one day gets an eerie vision from the past. She learns about a slaughter that happened in the very same house many years ago. A Dutch lady entity, Ivanna, appears in Ambar’s vision, giving her a glimpse of the tragedy where she got decapitated by a vile imperialist. Post the unexpected death of their grandmother, Ambar has to solve the vengeance of the entity that’s slowly creeping into their lives.
Ivanna stars Caitlin Halderman, Jovarel Callum, Junior Roberts, Shandy William, and Sonia Alyssa in major roles. It was one of the most commercially successful Indonesian films in a long while, thereby making it the fourth highest grossing Indonesian film of the year.
