Ishaan Ghose has proved that the legacy of the legendary filmmaker Goutam Ghose, his father, is in safe hands. His recent film ‘Jhilli’ marks the rise of a genius.
‘Jhilli’ written and directed by Ishaan Ghose premiered in 2021 but did not have a wide theatrical release in India. Now that it is streaming on Hoichoi, it is getting the attention it deserves.
Jhilli is a compassionate tale of the slums, or ‘bellies’ of Kolkata, where the light of education and civilization does not reach. It is the story of Bokul, a manual laborer, who works for a facility that crushes bones. Bokul finds that most of his friends are leaving the place and he is staying in the debris alone. He, being a fourth generation laborer, finds it hard to make changes, despite all desire. He finds out that the stinky place where he lives and works is going to be changing soon and there will be a huge recreational area. Bokul’s life changes drastically afterwards.
The music for the film is given by Soumajit Ghosh and Rajarshi Das. It stars actors like Bitan Biswas, Shombhunath De, Sayandeep Guha, Aranya Gupta, Sourav Nayak and many others. The film had not much of a traditional shooting script and was highly improvised during the shoot. You will be surprised to see what a spectacle the filmmaker has achieved with the film.
Jhilli is a must watch if you want to witness a cinematic masterpiece by a debutant director. Goutam Ghose has impressed viewers many a time with his exceptionally beautiful films but his son has achieved a huge feat in his very first film. The highly improvised story of Jhilli is a compassionate and sympathetic take on the lower life of the city of lights.
